School Age K - 12

Both federal and state law mandate a free appropriate public education for all school aged children until they graduate from high school or age out at their 22nd birthday.

Alexandria Community School Corporation provides school aged services in the follow settings:
1. Regular Class--the student participates in the general education classroom for 80% or more of the school day. This can include up to one class period per day of special education services (50 minutes daily).
2. Resource--the student participates 40%-79% in the general education classroom with the remainder of that time spent in the resource room or with special education staff in the general education setting.

3. Separate Class (Mild Interventions)--the student participates in the general education classroom for special area classes (art, music, PE, library, computers, character counts), lunch, and recess (20% or less of the school day). All academics take place in the self-contained mild interventions classroom due to the student being below gradelevel in all areas of academics. We offer one multiage K-2 classroom and one multiage 3-6 classroom. At this time there is no self-contained option for grades 7-12 located in Alexandria Community School Corporation.

Alexandria Community School Corporation is part of the Anderson Community School Corporation Cooperative and we work together to provide special education services to our students with low incidence disabilities. Students with more significant or low incidence disabilities for whom the case conference determines have a need for a self-contained placement are bussed to Anderson for self-contained moderate interventions, intense interventions, functional skills, severe emotional disabilities, and sometimes Blind/Low Vision or Deaf/Hard of Hearing depending on the severity. These students follow the Anderson Community Schools Calendar and are bused from their home to their school building. A bus aide is available to assist in loading and unloading.
Other placement options are a case conference decision after all other settings have been attempted.

Alexandria Community School Corporation provides limited school-age services to St. Marys School and home schooled students with disabilities as well. Contact the Office of Academic Programs and speak to the director if you have questions about private school services and home school services.
